Case study

Image:
Cover of this vibe magazine issue features a medium long shot of usher that captures the whole theme of him standing in front of an air jet and interoperates that he is a jet pilot. This shows that he is a hard man and hardworking which reflects onto his real job which most people are familiar with.
The fact that Usher is walking down the runway builds  up the persona of him being a worldwide star in addition to this there are no other people in the shot this reinforces the quote “there is no competition”
He is looking straight at the reader which establishes a relationship with them. However he is wearing glasses which maintain the view of being superior.
Page layout:
The same bold yellow and white font has been used throughout the use of lower letters gives the issue an informal effect the colour yellow is a relaxed colour which adds to the connotations of youth.
The text links the central image to the topics of the article about usher.
Cover lines important eye catching information is put up attract the audience’s attention and entice them to buy the magazine. Names are put in yellow to stand out from the rest of the text to also catch the reader’s attention letting them know that the magazine also contains articles about the celebrity.
Language:
Words like no competition, celeb, crazy, young and reckless appeal to the reader and make them feel the advice and information in the magazine is relevant to their own lives.
All the text on the cover page is written as conversation making the reader feel that he/she is directly spoken to making the reader feeling important.
It is also written short sentences which make the magazine sound fast paced, like the music industry this also adds to the magazines goal which is to keep the audience interested.

Image:
Again the image of usher is taken as long mid shot this is so the reader can see the whole of usher dressed in designer wear which shows of his status in the music industry.  Usher is standing boldly with his hand in his pocket and sunglasses on which reflects his calm and relaxed vibe
The shirts tucked in halfway and halfway unbuttoned this usher a rough and careless look which also interoperate that he isn’t afraid.
The background of this image is also very gloomy which makes usher stand out even than he already is.
Page layout:
The text on the left hand side is written simply but small compared to the image of usher this highlights the focus on usher.
The features again are written in short and snappy sentences so the magazine doesn’t reveal too much so it grabs the reader’s attention and entices them to read to further on into the magazine.
Language:
The Writing down the left is written in a simple font the language is also colloquial which makes it easier for reader to take in and more appealing for the reader.

Image:
The striking image of usher portrays usher in a calm and relaxed way as he exhales smoke in a seductive way.
His clothing makes him look casual and laid back but his cigar and watch still indicate his wealth and power.
In this image usher is wearing denim shirt which is branded by G-star RAW which is a high end designer clothing company which produces fashionable urban clothes. This could also portray the magazine as a current fashionable magazine as it feature’s someone who highly into fashion and also represents it.
Ushers facial expression makes him look influential which could mean he is making smoking look powerful.
Page layout:
The right side of the double page spread looks very dull as it just as chunks of writing which isn’t very appealing to some people so setting the writing out in this way maybe wasn’t the best way. The large sections of text make it daunting to read and look at but the small headed sections with bold subtitle make it more digestible for the reader as it is slightly more organised and broken up. This page contrasts to the large image as it looks busy and on-going, compared to the picture that’s laid back and relaxed.
Language:
The quote on the image of usher stands out from the background and makes the reader want to carry on reading the interview.
The quote from usher shows the audience his intentions within the music industry. Within the interview usher uses slang which gives the audience an informal register

Image:
This is issue of XXL magazine features two well-known artist (50 cent and Soulja boy) within the hip hop music industry.
The two artists are placed in front of the magazine logo which shows there power and status. This is beneficial for both artists and magazine as they both advertise each other the audience as powerful.
The two artists are looking directly at the camera which makes it look as if they are looking at the reader. This makes the reader feel important as it may feel like anything said in this magazine is directed towards them.
The artist on the left has covered his whole face but his eyes showing the direct gaze towards the reader.
This makes the artist look mysterious, this draws the reader’s attention and entices them to read on to find out who he really. This also makes the reader really question if it is really 50 cent because everyone knows 50 cent is heavily tattooed.
The head wrap causes 50 cent to have some sort of shadow under his eye’s  he also has his left arm in a position wear his left bicep is exposed. This gives the cover an intimidating look.
The artist on the right (soulja boy) is wearing three big chains accompanied by a huge watch and bracelet. These items show status and power as his jewellery is covered diamonds and gold. Soulja boy is also wearing a Gucci belt which is designer brand that sell fashionable clothes this could also mean that Soulja boy is a role model for fashion. Soulja boy is topless in this exposing his tattoo’s which is beneficial for the reader as it gives him more to look at.
50 cent has his arm around Soulja boy which interoperates that they have a bond. It also looks like 50 cent is some sort of icon to Soulja boy is beneath 50 cent in terms of height which could also mean that without 50 cent there wouldn’t have been Soulja boy.

 Layout:
The layout of this magazine issue is very simple. There is a use of large white space in the background of the photo. The background of this photo is actually a backdrop. This all adds simplicity to the magazine which is a good thing as it draws attention to the two male models.
These two male artists may be the reason why the rest of the magazine is so simple/plain meaning having these two artists on your front cover is enough.
Most of the cover lines as well as the masthead are all aligned on the left hand side to the magazine cover showing consistency throughout the whole magazine which also gives the magazine a professional look.
The colour scheme of this issue is red, white and black which 50 cent compliment as he is wearing a white vest and a white head wrap which both go with background. Both artists are wearing dark jeans but it doesn’t clash with other colours.
The masthead is colour in red. Red is a very bold colour and eye-catching so the colour helps the mast stand out which interoperates its importance.
Language:
The magazine is very simple so the amount of text present is limited. The amount of text demonstrates that this is a more visual informative magazine. This makes it much easier for audience as not everyone likes reading.
The cover line on the bottom left hand side of the magazine cover is a colloquial statement which the target audience may be able to relate to as they might sometimes might use this dialogue.
Some could argue that this cover line addresses certain members of the audience even though it doesn’t have a direct mode of address to the audience.
Image:
The main image again is of the well-known hip hop artist’s 50 cent and soulja boy.
The rappers are both again looking directly at the reader which makes him/her feel important (mode of address) simply because not one but two rappers are paying attention.
The two artists are in a back to back position which could interoperate that they have each other’s backs meaning there is a strong bond (trust).
In this image 50 cent is bigger than soulja boy but yet still he has his back turned so he has to turn around to look at the reader. This could mean that he’s coming back and isn’t afraid his face anymore so XXL could be telling us that 50 cent is back.

Layout:
The colour scheme of this page is the same as the front cover. This shows how consistent XXL magazine is. The layout of this contents page is very simple. The contents page also contains more detailed information compared to magazines such as vibe. XXL has also got its own unique selling point as they called their contents page the’ A-side’ rather than the old fashioned ‘contents’ .
All the text is located the left hand side of the page and then the image is located on the right. This is so the reader’s attention is drawn straight to the image after reading the text. The fact that XXL named their contents page ‘A-side’ gives them originality which is also exclusive to the magazine because it enables the reader to identify which magazine they are reading. This makes it a trademark.
Language:
The tittle ‘the a-side’ is written in lower case meaning its giving an informal approach to the audience. The features list is written in one column on the left side of the page but it has been split into two different sections by a thick black line. This separates the information into smaller bits which makes it easier for the reader to take in when reading the text.Like vibe the crossheads in XXL are in capital letters and are in bold font meaning they’re important bits of that subject/feature. This also draws the reader attention to read more about the subject /feature.
On the top of the page the first number is bigger than all the other indicating that this topic is more important or the main feature in the magazine. This also allows the reader to gain quick access as he or she would have already seen the main feature on the front cover.

Image:
This DPS contains an image of 50 cent with his head wrapped up again just like the front cover but this time he’s alone but yet again he still every feature on his face covered apart from his eyes. He is also looking straight at the reader meaning anything that is said within this article is directly aimed at the reader (mode of address.  50 cent has both of his biceps exposed which give the image an intimidating look.
The model’s is very simple but striking which manages to catch the reader’s attention. This image relates to the whole magazine because it’s a genre of hip hop and as we all know hip hop is a very wild and striking industry so the audience would there information quickly and easily accessible (instant gratification).
Layout:
The layout of this double page spread follows a conventional layout. This is when the main heading is on the top right hand side of the DPS and the picture is on the left side. The writing starts from the top right underneath the heading and contuse all the way down to the bottom of the page. The effect
